first thing first..why do i even need a morning routine?
A morning routine is essential for a successful day. Having a routine can help set the tone of your day. It allows you to have better control of your schedule. A morning routine is a set of actions you do before getting your actual day started. It could be useful for helping to give you more energy throughout the day, to be more productive, reduce stress, creating a habit or help with being more consistent. I will be specifically focusing on a self care morning routine and giving self-care ideas.
The importance of having a self care morning routine is because you will be focusing on yourself and putting your needs first. When you take of yourself, you’re able to be the best version of you. Being the best version of yourself is beneficial, not only for you but also if you have others that depend on you, like children! A morning self care routine can be great for you mentally, physically and emotionally.
Some self-care ideas to create a routine
When you start to create your routine, you want to know the things you want to get done. A morning routine is gonna look different for everyone, depending on your lifestyle and goals. You should write a list of things that you want to include. That way you won’t forget anything when you’re writing out your routine.
I simply wrote my routine and self-care ideas in the ‘Notes’ section of my phone. You can write yours in a notebook, a planner, on your phone, or if you happen to be the lucky ones with a great memory, (because that’s definitely NOT me, lol) you can just memorize it. I wrote out some self-care ideas you also may want to include in your routine!
1. Spiritual
If you’re a religious or spiritual person, you may want to include praying or meditating in your routine. For me, I like prayer to be one of the first things I do when I get up in the morning. I love to spend the first part of my morning with God and worshiping Him. Meditating is great for connecting with your inner self and practicing mindfulness.
2. Health
Movement like HIIT workouts or yoga in the morning is an excellent way for starting your day. Exercise can give you so much energy to help you get through your day. Especially if you tend to have busy days like me! It’s also great for helping to reduce anxiety and improving a negative mood (for the grouchy ones in the morning)!
3. Personal Growth
Things like journaling, affirmations, listening to podcasts, reading a chapter of a book, or studying the bible are great ways to help you be mentally prepared before your day starts. I personally love to say affirmations or quotes loud in my bathroom mirror and listen to a chapter or two on audible afterward.

4. Body
Things like shower, brush your teeth, comb hair, skincare, etc. Of course, these are things I really don’t have to mention because they are obvious! But I’m going to include them anyway because someone will literally forget about them! Making sure your appearance is great and looking your best is great for your confidence during the day.
5. Create Habits
Last but not least, if there are any new habits you have been wanting to start, then definitely include them now! Examples could be waking up earlier, making your bed when you wake up, practicing gratitude, or stretching. You could also spend a few minutes going over any goals you may have already created for yourself. Just to make sure you’re on track with them or need to tweak them a bit!
Putting it All Together
Now that you have written your list of tasks/actions that you want to include in your routine in the morning, set it up in the order and times you need to get things done. Here is an example of the way your routine could look like:
- 5:30 am Wake Up/Make bed/Pray
- 5:45 am Meditate
- 6:00 am Exercise/Yoga
- 6:30 am Shower/ Brush Teeth/ Clean Face
- 7:15 am Eat breakfast while listening to Podcast
- 8:00 Get day started
Setting time limits to make sure you’re getting everything done without spending too much time on one thing is a good idea. If you need, you can use a planner to help assist with staying on track.
Make sure you’ve included the important and necessary things in your routine but not too much. You want to be able to have a routine that you will stick to for a long time!
Consistency is Key
Consistency is the only way to go if you want to actually make your routine a habit. Try to stick to your routine for a couple of weeks to make sure it’s best for you. If it’s not working out, you can always go back to the drawing board by recreating it entirely or just by changing some stuff. You can add things or take some things out. Just whatever is gonna be best for you and you life at the time.
Being consistent will set you up for turning your routine into a habit. It will eventually become second nature to you. Then you will wake up and effortlessly get through your morning tasks. Which, in turn, will lead you to be more productive during your day.
This is only some self care ideas to help get you started with your routine. There is definitely so much more you could possibly add to your morning. Like I said, we all have different lifestyles, so your routine will be very much different from the next person’s. Routines can and will change as your life changes. There is no right or wrong way to your morning routine. It’s just what works best for your goals at the time of your life.
